Prof. Dr. Thomas Hess is Professor of Information Systems and Business Administration at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and heads the Institute for Digital Management and New Media at the LMU Munich School of Management. His work focuses on the digital transformation of companies, digital media businesses and other aspects of the digital economy. After completing a degree in information systems at TU Darmstadt, Thomas Hess earned his doctorate at the University of St. Gallen in 1995, worked as an assistant to the executive board at Bertelsmann and completed his habilitation at the University of Göttingen in 2001. He has been at LMU since 2001. In Munich, he established the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (BIDT) and the IBC research-practice cluster, and introduced the Management and Digital Technologies degree programme. Thomas Hess is the author of the German-language books "Digitale Transformation strategisch steuern" ("Managing Digital Transformation Strategically") and "Die Software-Industrie: Ökonomische Prinzipien, Strategien, Perspektiven" ("The Software Industry: Economic Principles, Strategies, Perspectives"), as well as numerous publications for management practitioners. Through many years on the supervisory board of an MDAX-listed company, consulting projects and publications, Prof. Hess maintains close ties with management practice.
